Happy to announce that we're doing a little distro for Mongrel Zine here on the site.
For most of you in and around Vancouver, Mongrel probably needs little introduction, but we'll gush about it anyways: a top shelf rock n' roll zine handcrafted with a level of love and care that will remind you how easily we used to take this stuff for granted. And, you get some amazing cd comps ta boot!
Issues 2, 4 and 5 are now available, listed in the "Garage Sale" section at the bottom of the Records page.

MONTREAL MIRROR REVIEW - NASTY ON, SQUID
Jun 06, 2009
The Nasty On Squid (La Ti Da) This posthumous, vinyl-only release of pure R’n’R mayhem proves it’s better late than never. Better get the lead out as there aren’t many around. 7.5 (JC)

Nasty On - Squid reviewed in this week's Georgia Straight.
May 23, 2009
By Adrian Mack
Despite much smoother edges, Nasty On’s first release since 2002’s landmark CitySick sits perfectly to the left of Vancouver’s newly celebrated weird punk underground, with the on-hiatus band assuming its position in a line that stretches all the way back to Slow. The songs on the vinyl-only Squid are wayward and violent, although prettily and sometimes lengthily so, like “The Ship That Died of Shame”. Still, “They Were Wrong and I Was Alright” resurrects the universe-in-uproar chaos of the band on any good night at the Pic sometime in 2003.
The closest thing to a hook comes in “Downtown Tigers”, which is like a paranoid rewrite of “Wild Thing”, complete with references to the Son of Sam, but the impression is that Nasty On has made an album to be swallowed whole, and on its own terms. It’s a challenging, spooked mindfuck, and at times it’s utterly magnificent, seemingly recorded on the fly while vocalist Jason Grimmer unloaded whatever the hell was haunting him in the moment they rolled tape.
There are more questions than answers hanging over Squid. Is opening track “Last Movie” a reference to the fabled Dennis Hopper film made at the very height of his chemical-saturated madness? Even if it isn’t, the mood is definitely similar, as if Nasty On has printed its Green Inferno of the mind on tape.

Dub at The Pub 10 Year Anniversary! Tuesday, November 25th
Nov 10, 2008
A hearty shout out to DJ's High & I. Ten years of holding down Calgary's, make that Western Canada's, best club night for Dub, Reggae, Ska, and every other subgenre of Jamaican riddims under the coconut tree. If you're in the Calgary area, make your way down to The Drum & Monkey for the anniversary party on Tuesday, November 25th, featuring a live performance by Jamaican legend Sister Nancy!

It seems like yesterday when these guys started this night, promoting it with those incredible mixtapes. Here's to 10 more years. Al, you've made your godsons proud. Peace.
